Irene Benedicto

Irene believes in journalism to bridge gaps between communities. She was U.S. correspondent for Efe News (Agencia Efe), the largest news agency worldwide in the Spanish language, in Washington DC, where she covered the 2016 election campaign. She was also a contributor to the Euranet Plus, a European Union broadcast service that brings together European radio stations, in Brussels.

She is currently press officer at La Caixa Foundation (the largest foundation in Spain, third worldwide), where she manages the communications strategy for the International Development projects in partnership with UNHCR and UNICEF, among others. She combines her job with freelancing at the online newspaper Pú, where she writes about a broad range of topics, from the Italian election to the migrants' crisis in the Mediterranean.

Irene was a professional fencer for 9 years, competing around the world with the National Spanish Fencing team. Right before the Rio Olympic Games, she traded a shot to fulfill the bigger dream of being an international journalist. Her career obsession is the fight against Fake News through Media Literacy and Solution-oriented Journalism.
